Many an evening has been spent at IOTA, from it’s early days as a cozy sliver of brick and drink to it’s current wonder of ambiance and sound. Always a great place to see a show it was with a good deal of joy that I had my turn at walking the boards of it’s stage. With the show only coming together a few days beforehand and on a Monday to boot – drawing was sure to be an issue, and in hopes of keeping the party already in the place going (dancing children and all) the bill ended up being turned upside down. So in a break with my Sad Crocodile tradition, I ended up atop the card.
All by my lonesome for the night, I played a punchy set that sounded amazing from where I sat. One of better singing shows, the highlight was Vander working the board. Delighting in my performance, he took joy in each twisting line. Smiling all the way I couldn’t help but smile back – despite it being so counter to the songs themselves – or is it? A few people recently have mentioned a sense of humor in the lyrics which fits me to a tee but I don’t even see there. This is the first time a total stranger has taken such pleasure in the analysis of my/our darker corners. He just was so excited to hear a little piece of truth.
Walking to the stage as I was leaving, he shook my hand and told me that he would be having a Christmas party solely for the reason of booking me to play. He then looked me in the eye with a little twinkle and uttered “I like my shit dark man, but you took it to a whole ‘nother level.”
